In my last post, I shared my reflections on 2024—the highs, the lows, and the lessons that shaped the year. Now, it’s time to turn the page and look ahead to what’s next.
I’m not a big fan of New Year’s resolutions. They tend to feel like quick fixes or lofty promises that get lost somewhere between January 1st and February. Instead, I prefer a more intentional approach—a framework to set the course for the year ahead, define where I want to be at the end, and map out how I’ll get there.
Normally, I use someone else’s framework to guide this process. Over the years, I’ve tried everything: Chris Guillebeau’s Year in Review, Year Compass, Monk Manual You Are Here, etc.—you name it. Each one offered something valuable, but this year, I thought, why use someone else’s when I can create my own?
So I did. And now, I want to share it with you.
Why Plan for the Year Ahead?
Planning for the year ahead isn’t about perfection or checking off every box. It’s about creating a vision for your life and aligning your actions with the person you want to become. Here’s why I find this process so important:
- Set Your Compass: Planning helps you define what truly matters and set your direction for the year.
- Break It Down: Big dreams can feel overwhelming, but with a plan, you can turn them into manageable, actionable steps.
- Stay Grounded: Life gets messy. A plan gives you something to return to—a reminder of your “why” when things feel chaotic.
- Celebrate Progress: Reflecting on your plan at the end of the year lets you see how far you’ve come, even if the path wasn’t linear.

- Reflect on where you’ve been.
- Dream about where you want to go.
- Build a flexible roadmap to guide you through the year.
It’s not about rigid deadlines or perfection. It’s about creating a tool to support your journey—your way.
